Yoga, the thousand years old Hindu philosophy of maintaining physiological fitness, is getting much more popularity day by day for its scientific base and methods. This ancient philosophy with its root in Indian culture, is successfully spreading its wide branches in the global arena. A growing number of people are including yoga in their daily lives to get a balanced life with sound mind and body. Daily practicing of appropriate yoga poses lead an individual to acquire a good health for as long as he or she lives. Hatha yoga, Karma yoga, pranayama, meditation, Kundalini yoga are some of the various forms of Yoga which are generally practiced by common people in daily life. Practicing yoga incorporated with music, particularly Yoga music, ensures better result.

From ancient times yoga is considered as a Sadhana or soulful practice. For the aspirants who want to start yoga practice, it would be advisable to make a routine for daily practicing. Doctor’s advice should be taken in special cases like during pregnancy, after major surgery or during any chronic medical severities. Yoga is beneficial only if it can be practiced regularly and timely. According to the ancient Yoga books the best time to perform yoga is early morning, just before the sunrise. There is no harm in practicing it in other timings but morning is just the perfect time. One can allot a particular time for doing Yoga exercises and follow it in a daily basis. Yoga exercises or asanas are best done on an empty stomach and in a quite place, free from any noise. One can also play some soothing meditation music to enliven the atmosphere as well as enhance the mood.

Plenty of Yoga DVDs and CDs available at Spirit Voyage, the online music company, can also be a great help for learning and doing yoga sadhana. These DVDs and CDs give proper instructions and required information on yoga and how to practice Yoga and other dos and don’ts. These guidelines also contain visuals for every poses or asanas. Thus, the seemingly tough task becomes much more easier and effortless. Yoga accessories also make the sadhana comfortable and perfect. Using various yoga accessories like yoga mat, yoga clothing, yoga cushions, yoga malas and jwewlleries etc. are very much helpful in getting the desired result. Yoga mat ensures less energy loss and thus higher level of concentration. Yoga cushions make the practitioners feel comfortable while doing tough yoga poses like Kundalini yoga poses etc.

One thing should be kept in mind that if someone is doing Yoga for the first time, there is a good chance of having muscle cramp while doing yoga or later on that day. So it is better to start with some easier poses, habituating the body with those poses for next few days and then go for the strenuous or tough ones. Within one month the body muscles will be much more flexible. Continuity of time and duration is also another prior thing of yoga practicing. But practicing yoga should be stopped if someone is suffering from illness or women during their menstruation. One can also find these informations on the Yoga DVDs and CDs offered by Spirit Voyage.

Spirit Voyage also has a rich collection of Yoga music and meditation music. The pure and divine music creates the perfect ambiance of doing yoga at home by relaxing the mind and thus increasing the level of concentration. Artists like Deva Premal, Wah!, Snatam Kaur, Donna De Lory and Gurmukh have lent their enchanting pure voices in these albums which make the mind flow like a river.

Lucid dreaming may be one way of accessing information from the recesses of your mind or participating in a dream but sometimes, it involves even more. Lucid dreamers and those that practice dream control sometimes find themselves viewing places and people that exist and situations that occur miles away. Those that have this form of lucid dream actually advanced to another level, the accomplishment of out of body experiences.

A lucid dreamer knows they’re dreaming. Some of the clues that one has a lucid dream are noting odd occurrences in the dream. Lucid dreamers recognize they’re in a dream state when they read text, turn away and the text changes; see people that couldn’t possibly exist such as historical figures or three headed men; watch people perform feats that don’t occur in nature as flying without the aid of a mechanical device or note a mythical land and land formations. The dream controller already has a firm grasp of the lucid dream and now, sometimes through magical methods, changes the face of the dream.

People that have out of body experiences, however, are neither dreaming nor awake. They have the power to see scenes occurring outside their environment. They view reality rather than a dream.

An out of body experience does not include storybook or fictional characters but real people. While most OBE, out of body experiences, occur on this plane in the same time span, the person doesn’t have to remain in their own time and space.Theoretically, you can move forward or backward in time, just as you move about in space.

One quite accomplished person in OBEs was Edgar Cayce who allowed himself to fall into an almost comatose sleep, view other’s physical problems sent to him by mail and make recommendations for healing which were recorded by his secretary. Cayce went back through time to the “mythical” city of Atlantis and viewed outer space. Whether you believe the many recorded OBEs of Edgar Cayce or not, there is no doubt he helped thousands of people to achieve wellness.

OBEs occur at various times but often under the same conditions as sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis often occurs when a person wakes or falls into REM sleep. During that time, only the eye muscles and those that cause circulation and respiration are active. The nerve center immobilizes the other muscles to prevent acting out the dream. If the dreamer wakes during that time, they find themselves paralyzed. Those that have OBEs also have lucid dreams according to studies done by Blackmore in 1983 and 1984, Irwin in 1988 and Glicksohn in 1989.

Scientists created a helmet that sent magnetic impulses to the temporal lobe. It created vivid images and was supposed to explain OBEs, but neglected one fact; sometimes people gather information during an OBE that they have no other means of knowing. This form of OBE is phenomena not explained by any scientist at this time and leaves one to conclude there may be true projection.

Each level of lucid dreaming seems to act as a stair step for the next level. Once people learn to recall dreams, the next level, the lucid dream begins. After lucid dreams come dream control and astral projection. While there’s no scientific data to prove any of the levels conclusively, there is convincing anecdotal evidence that it does exist. The fact that you can train yourself to attain each level is also proof that everyone is capable of mastering the mind to achieve these phenomena and potentially tap into psychic powers that lay dormant in the mind.

Lucid dreaming is one method of solving difficult problems you have during the waking hours. Since your mind isn’t focusing on other tasks as you sleep, like sensory input, it allows it to be far more creative. If you’ve ever forgotten a name, a date or even something important you wanted to tell someone and simply decided to quit stressing and allow it to simply come to you, you’ll understand how lucid dreaming works. You relax your thoughts and the solutions find you rather than the other way around.

Scientists, artists and novelists often find important information in lucid dreams. In order to use the information found in lucid dreaming the first challenge, however, is to conquer dream recall. Dream recall is simply the ability to remember your dreams. Often, people awakened in the middle of a dream remember the dream for a few seconds and then the memory disappears as they shake off the grogginess of sleep. For those practicing dream recall, a journal and pen by the bedside is mandatory. Even if you have only fragments of dream memory, it’s still a place to begin.

Once the dreamer accomplishes dream recall, or at least partially conquers it, the next process is lucid dreaming. In lucid dreaming, you’re aware of that you’re in a dream. For those that want to solve a problem, taking lucid dreaming one step farther might be necessary. The next step, dream control, allows the dreamers to put themselves into the situation where they can solve the problem they have in their waking hours. Sometimes this is not necessary as the dreamer sees the solution in the dream without any additional input.

Sometimes artists find that lucid dreams bring them bonuses they weren’t expecting. Paul McCartney of the Beatles found the tune for the song “Yesterday” in a lucid dream. He said he heard the tune played by a string ensemble in a dream and awoke with the tune still in his head. He sat at the piano and reproduced the tune. While he loved it, he didn’t think he actually wrote it because it came to him in a dream and was nothing like his previous tunes.

Another lucid dreamer, the first female American to be a self made millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker was also the first freeborn member of her family of former slaves. Walker suffered from a scalp infection that caused the loss of her hair. In order to solve her problem she began experimenting with various hair-care products. One night in a dream, a large black man came to her in her dreams. He told her how to mix the formula to cure the problem. Even though some of the ingredients came from Africa, she ordered them anyway and since the formula worked for her, began to sell it to friends. She turned that dream into a successful African-American centered cosmetic company.

Others that used dreams to solve problems include Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine and Mary Shelly the author of “Frankenstein”. Several scientists also fall into the ranks of lucid dreamers and problem solvers. Friedrich August  von Stradonitz used it frequently in his study of organic chemistry and made huge contributions to the scientific community. Otto Loewi, a Nobel Prize winner also used lucid dreaming to find a method of proving his theory of chemical transmission of nerve impulses in the body.

Lucid dreaming can come naturally to people or accomplished by practice. The key is always being able to remember what the subconscious mind tells you in a dream. For that, the practice of dream recall is of utmost importance.

Lucid dreaming may occur intentionally or quite by accident. Many often have a lucid dream by accident and realize they can control the destiny of their dreams. A lucid dream occurs when the dreamer realizes he’s asleep and dreaming and takes control of the dream. It may be to solve a problem in waking life, control a problem within the dream or simply direct the dream to an enjoyable experience. Athletes, actors and dancers often practice their avocation during a lucid dream.

Everyone has had a lucid dream at least once in a lifetime. Some people learn very early that they can control their dreams and later use them for problem solving, control of nightmares or visualizing a course of action for the next day.

One subject realized early in life there was a possibility of lucid dreaming. As a child, a reoccurring nightmare plagued her when she slept. One of the nightmares involved a scene from a battleground. Hundreds of people, men women, children and babies were trying to escape the battlefield but they had to climb a steep icy slope to get to safety. Night after night, she watched in her dream as people would almost reach the top and slide back down the slope to the bottle. She’d awake in tears, beads of perspiration speckling her forehead as she saw babies attempt to climb to safety and slide back down to the abyss of danger as their parents, grappled and ended in the same fate.

After almost a month, she decided to create an ending for the dream that saved the people. Up until that time, she was the omniscient viewer. Now, it was time to take an active participation in the dream. The dreamer created an ending to her dream. One where she joined the people, had planes awaiting that dropped lines to pull the people up and away from the war. She actively participated in the dream and after several nights, the nightmare no longer occurred. At that point, she learned to control other nightmares she had and eventually use dreaming as a problem solving method.

Most people don’t record their dreams immediately upon waking. By the time they’ve had their morning shower, most of the details of the dream are fuzzy at best. People who use lucid dreaming as a method of solving problems, however, are different. Often they implant the problem in their mind before they go to sleep and tell themselves they’ll find an answer.

They direct their dreams to the problem at hand; look at the solutions provided in their subconscious and upon awakening, immediately record the results of a dream. While the first attempt may not bring an immediate solution, it often brings them closer to their goals. The dreamer may not control the dream but simply watch, fully aware that it’s a dream and use the information during the waking hours.

Lucid dreaming can occur without previous training. At some point in the middle of the dream, the lucid dreamer suddenly realizes he or she is in a dream and there’s nothing to fear. From that moment, the nightmare ceases being scary or the pleasant dream becomes even better. People learning new physical or mental skills often use lucid dreaming to practice routines, learn the material or solve problems they couldn’t during waking hours. It is a tool everyone, with a little practice, can use to improve his or her life.

Albert Einstein, Strictly Scientist or Simply Intelligent Intuitive?

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Is one quote that gives you some insight into the mind of Albert Einstein.

A few quotes by Einstein enlighten us on his belief in intuition and creativity as an aid to scientific discovery:

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”

“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

“Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.”

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”

Einstein used visualization techniques to arrive at some of his theories, including that of relativity. On that occasion, he sat and visualized what the world would look like if you rode on a beam of light through the universe. He often used visualization techniques as his preferred method of discovery.

Einstein knew that his methods of deduction with the use of images was not acceptable and chose initially to hide the facts. An important quote that shows you of Einstein’s use of non-traditional methods of discovery is as follows:

“The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.”

He knew that anything was possible and felt that there was no world you couldn’t conquer with the right techniques. When speaking on attaining information from a colleague he noted: “Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

Einstein was a genius in that he used more parts of his brain than those simply available for rational thinking. He shunned traditional methods and often commented on those that uselessly clung to it. In giving advice for learning, he suggested opening the universe of the mind.

Einstein had problems with traditional learning methods, which drove him to the use of his creative side of the brain. Perhaps this is what made him a great scientist. He looked at things through different eyes to find the hidden solutions to problems.

Was Einstein smarter than the average person is? He might not have been brighter when he was in school. Unlike the popular belief that IQ is static, it’s proven quite mobile. People born with lower IQs can raise them and those born with more capability can find their brainpower dropping with lack of use. Accessing all portions of the brain and using new areas is one way to increase the IQ. Perhaps, one of the greatest minds in history started out average but his quest into other parts of the brain increased his abilities.

A quote from Einstein condenses all the potential that Einstein believed every individual shared and why some people never achieve their potential.

“A human being is a part of a whole, called by us “universe”, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

An intimate touch of sound or music can penetrate the whole being of human body. From the ancient ages this is a proven fact. Particularly in India, music for its rich root is considered as an integral part of Yoga practicing. And India has also a rich source of instrumental music with its innumerable kinds of musical instruments be it classical, traditional or folk. Every kind, every type and every genre has its own distinct characteristics. The mild and melodious tunes of flute or the healing sound of sitar, each one soothes the mind and soul. Instrumental music can be used as the best kind of meditation music. As the beautiful sounds of instruments help the mind and soul to relax and concentrate on a single thought.

Yoga or meditation is a way to connect oneself with the divine power or God. Gods and Goddesses often have a close association with music. It is said that the melodious tune from the flute of Krishna, the God of love, overflows this earth with serene divinity. Musical instruments are also used to worship Saraswati, the Goddess of music. Instrumental music frees the mind from all mundane thoughts and pulls the mind towards the Divine. Thus, it transforms the mind into a higher level of concentration required in practicing Yoga. Music also plays a significant role in some particular forms of Yoga like Hatha yoga or Kundalini Yoga.
Traditional musical instruments like flute or bansuri, tanpura and sitar are mainly suitable to form the base of yoga music for their calming sounds. Generally these instruments are used to compose the music-tracks of Yoga DVDs which relieve the mind from all anxieties, tensions or worries thus helping it to relax. The sound of bansuri is perfect to be used in meditation or yoga. Sometimes natural sounds like sounds of waterfalls or birdsong when woven with instrumental music creates a harmony between the mother nature and human kind. This heavenly symphony makes the Union with the Absolute amazingly smooth and perpetual.

Music heightens the consciousness of human being which is a pre-requisite for practicing any kind of yoga – be it Kundalini yoga, Karma yoga, Nada yoga or Vikrama yoga. But vocal music can distract the mind as the mind seems to get involved in understanding the lyrics and voice. Whereas calm and relaxing instrumental music is free from such kind of mind-distraction features. Minimal use of heavy sounds or instruments and maximum use of mind-refreshing light sounds evoke the spiritual sense within. Nothing can be better than these tranquil tunes as meditation music. Incorporating these types of music into yoga practicing can lead to a greater level of self-realization and attainment of moksha.

Spirit Voyage, an online music company, is rich with its massive collection of instrumental yoga music suitable for practicing yoga or meditation. This collection will surely transform the mind of the practitioner into a higher level of divine calmness. This company also offers wide range of music of different genres such as meditation music, yoga music CDs and DVDs etc. which promise to satisfy the demands of the yoga admirers. Artists like Deva Premal, Wah!, Snatam Kaur, Donna De Lory and Gurmukh have lent their pure voices which transform the atmosphere into a highest level of divine meditative state.

Navigating the journey between childhood and teenager status can be both a fantastic and treacherous adventure. At the onset of puberty, everything seems to change. Youth experience dramatic, often sudden, transformations of physical systems, cognitive capacities and social relationships. It is natural for youth to experience some degree of confusion or disequilibrium about these major life alterations. The fluctuations in mood and opinion can be just as confusing for the people who live and work with youth.

Fortunately, ancient health systems, like Yoga, can contribute to finding balance and ease in the face of today’s mounting challenges. Here, I will share three practices that I have found helpful to the teens I have worked with over a decade’s time in the field. The following practices address three distinct needs that many early adolescents share: self- awareness, emotional regulation, and energy rejuvenation. The benefits of each exercise are included.

  1. Breath Moves Energy

Sit in a comfortable cross-legged pose on the floor. Sitting on a cushion or folded blanket that lifts the hips higher than the knees can be helpful for achieving more lift in the spine. Root the tailbone into the Earth. Extend the spine tall, drawing the shoulder blades onto the upper back. Spread across the collarbones. Balance the ears just above the shoulders so the neck is lengthened, but not straining. Enjoy five deep breaths simply being aware of breath and body.

With a deep inhale, extend both arms out to the side and up, joining the palms overhead. Exhaling, draw the joined hands down the midline of the body, past the face, heart and center. Inhale, arms reach out and up overhead. Exhale, center the mind and body as the hands pull down the midline. Repeat 10 to 20 times being mindful of movements and breath the entire time.

Why this works: When the body, mind and breath move together in concert, the whole system reaches a higher level of harmony. Explain to youth that yoga is about linking all of the different parts of ourselves together: physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social. All of these parts can be compared to a band. When one part is out of tune, the whole song can sound unpleasant. Yoga is a practice of tuning our various parts to the same note.

  1. Balance Through Challenges

Stand tall with feet hips width apart. Spread the toes and press evenly through all four corners of the feet. Firm leg muscles. Extend the tailbone towards the floor and activate the abdominal muscles. Lengthen the side body. Draw the shoulder blades onto the upper back, spreading across the collarbones. Gently lengthen the back of the neck, reaching up through the crown of the head. This is Mountain Pose.  Once Mountain Pose is established and steady, find one spot on the floor about 4 feet in front of the feet to focus the eyes. Try to keep the eyes softly placed on the chosen spot for the entire exercise.

Now, extend both arms out to the side to help maintain balance. Press deliberately into the right foot, slowly lifting the left foot from the floor. Place the sole of the left foot onto the inner calf muscle or inner thigh of the right leg. (Note: Avoid placing the left foot on the right knee as the pressure on the joint can be unsafe.) The left knee points outward and the toes of the left foot face the floor. As balance is established, reach arms overhead into Tree Pose. Practice paying attention to the breath and keeping the eyes focused. Repeat on the other side.

    • Cultivate core strength and balance
    • Develop emotional regulation
    • Increase muscular strength and tone in legs, trunk and arms

Why this works: Learning to stay focused and calm during the challenge of balancing on one foot is a skill that transfers to many activities. In this exercise, the body, mind and breath work together to achieve balance for the whole system.

  1. Let Go and Trust the Flow

Lie down face up on the floor. Use a blanket, mat or rug for comfort if desired. With legs straight, place feet wider than hips width. Extend arms out beside the body with hands below heart level and palms open to the sky. Close the eyes and find the breath. Starting from the toes and feet, relax each part of the body all the way up to the crown of the head. Let the bones and muscles release into the floor. Allow the organs to soften. Find the heartbeat. Stay in this position for 5 to 10 minutes rejuvenating the body’s energy and allowing the mind to be spacious.

Why this works: Adolescents need to rest! They often stay up until late hours of the night and need to wake up early for school. Lack of rest creates moodiness and lethargy. Five to 10 minutes of focused resting can save hours of wasted time.

These simple, practical practices can be offered to tweens at home or in a classroom environment. One does not need to be a certified Yoga teacher to help guide youth toward the practice. Remember: youth do not typically enjoy being pushed in any direction, so a subtle approach may be most successful. Letting tweens know that they have power in shaping their life can inspire them to give the tools a try. Offer the practices as a choice and allow them to enter the practice in their own time.

Yoga practice can contribute to wellness, happiness and balance in anyone’s life who is open to the experience, particularly youth.  Be mindful to educate youth on the benefits of the practices and how their individual lives can be enhanced.

Namaste:) Yoga is approximately 5000 years old and it is the best physical, mental and spiritual exercise ever.

Yoga (yuj) means “to control,” “to yoke”, “to unite”, “joining,” “uniting,” “union,” “conjunction,” and “means.” You will get all the benefits from this awesome exercise as soon as you start practicing. Let me share the top yoga tips with you first:

  1. Learn the Benefits of Yoga: Yoga improves balance, stamina, strength, and flexibility; reduces stress and anxiety quickly.
  2. Choose a yoga style: The major branches of yoga are Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Juana Yoga, Bhaki Yoga, and Raja Yoga. Choose a style that matches your fitness level, personality, and health condition.
  3. Drinking and Eating: Yoga is best done on an empty stomach. If possible, do not eat anything for two hours before your yoga workout.
  4. Yoga Instruction: Yoga for a beginner should be done under the supervision of an experienced teacher. A skilled teacher will make corrections to postures (asanas) so you won’t injure yourself and can also offer modifications if you have any physical restrictions.
  5. Where to Practice Yoga: The ideal yoga setting should be well ventilated, naturally lit, and free from distractions. You can find beginner yoga classes at many studios and gyms. Most of the time initial classes are free, so you can try different classes to see which ones you like best.
